Before anybody panics over this notice of inquiry to the FCC from the RIAA about recording “digital radio”, some notes:
1. By “digital radio” they mean “in-band on-channel digital radio”, and by that, they mean digital-radio-over-airwaves. They don’t mean the Internet.
2. The FCC is just asking for feedback about it, not defining (or even proposing) any rules such as “broadcast flags” or the like yet.
3. IBOC Digital Radio uses ID3 and SMIL for broadcasting meta-data (I just found this amusing).
Hopefully that will prevent the round of “you guys are so dead” comments we normally get whenever the RIAA sneezes.
